Desecrating Graves is an Unislamic Act
(SHHRF 0028/2005, Wednesday, 05 January 2005)
(English version)

On 19 January 2005, it has been reported that a Somalia militia based in Mogadishu has desecrated an Italian colonial cemetery. It has also been claimed that the militia digged the graves and dumped the human remains near Mogadishu’s ruined international airport. Unfortunately, some of these remains even ended as toys to children.

We strongly denounce vandalizing burial places as they are both inhuman as well as unislamic. Desecrating any place of memory cannot have any justification at all. Islam pays respect to the dead.  Vandalizing graveyards is simply a lunatic behaviour

It was shocking to learn that this militia belongs to some of Mogadishu Islamic Courts. It is an irony that these militias belonged to the Islamic Courts as they had shown good service towards the people of Mogadishu.

The Islamic Courts were set to bring law and order in the capital’s unruly streets, and because of this they earned the trust of people traumatized by years of violence. In other words, they have filled the security vacuum created by the collapse of the state in early 1990s.

Every Somalis has responsibility to denounce and help in bringing to their senses those responsible for the shocking and appalling act of graveyard vandalism.
