Appeal
For The Release of Gaboye People
(SHHRF 0051/2005, 1 July 2005)
To:
His Excellency President Dahir Riyale Kahin
Re:
Appeal for the Release of Gaboye People
Dear Mr President
We appeal to your
authority for the release of Gaboye demonstrators who were detained in a
solitary confinement at the Criminal Investigation Department detention
centre and some unknown locations in Somaliland. These people were staging a
non-violent demonstration against the unlawful killing of one of their
member, named Khadar Osman Dhabar, by a police officer of your
administration.
Following the
demonstration, Gaboye demonstrators and their sympathisers were rounded by
Somaliland police in a witch-hunt fashion arresting many of them including
children and women. Some are said to be on hunger strike which may cause a
further hardship to them.
Arresting people for
their opinion is a transgression of the basic human rights. The Gaboye
people have been suffering within Somali society for centuries. It is about
time to redress old wounds and not inflict new ones.
We appeal to your
authority:
-
To the release the
detained Gaboye and their sympathisers,
-
To carry an independent
inquiry of the death of Khadar Osman Dhabar and on the basis of this
finding, your administration should persecute the killer of Khadar Osman.
-
To redress the damage
done on the this community for the loss they incurred
-
To help improve the lives of the Gaboye
people
Thank you for giving
us the chance to pass you and your government our concerns.
Yours sincerely.
